Netherlands

For this week I randomly chose to do the Netherlands. The Netherlands are located in Western Europe, between Germany and Belgium, and boarding the North Sea. They are a large exporter of agriculture product. When I did my research using Lexis Nexis a lot of the the articles dealt with cancer cures.

I chose my article randomly picking a page number and reading the headlines that said "Netherlands Receives First Lockheed Martin Pac 3 Missiles." Back in October of 2007, the Netherlands became the first international sale of the Pac 3 Missiles. This purchase marks for the continuation of the forefront air defense. The Netherlands are of the United States strongest NATO allies. They were also the launch customers for the Patriot weapon system. Other countries that are able to upgrade to the Pac 3 missiles include Germany, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Greece, Spain, Japan, Israel, and Taiwan.

The Netherlands was a good choice for a random country. I thought your article was very interesting. I would never have guessed that the Netherlands were involved in military affairs as with missiles! It is a relief to know that the United States has so many allies like the Netherlands that may benefit us now and in the future. But I thought the trend of cancer in the other articles pretty sad. I hope there could be people that can find a cure for cancer soon. The Netherlands is an unpredictable start!

This was an interesting article for me. I guess when I hear the words "The Netherlands" the thought of them having weapons like that just amazes me. When I think of the Netherlands, the words "carefree" or maybe a scene like from "The Sound of Music" comes to my mind. I see people dancing through fields of flowers, not worrying about a missle attack from another country. It is wonderful to know we have so many allies in this world to help us in the event a country decides to get rough with us here. Personally, I hate the thought of something like that going on here, like it does over in Iraq. In regards to where you found this article, we ARE allowed to use Nexislexis to do research? I thought it was NOT considered an academic source? So if someone could please help me out with this I would appreciate it.

The Netherlands IS a random place to search. My friend Drew is from there, but I've never heard anything about it from him. It sounds like a peaceful place really, and I would never think they would be the first to sell missiles. What is the world coming to?! I bet they're obtaining plenty of money for the missiles however; since we are in a war, they could be used down the line. I think it would be horrifying if it came down to that though!

Agricultural products are nice though, at least they're not all about the missiles, just about protection. Are they far on the cancer cures? That would be wonderful if they would be the first to find a cure for cancer. Better than the missiles at least.

This was very interesting. Like the people above me had said, I would have never of picked the Netherlands as a random country, just because it's not something that usually comes to mind. The thought that they have such powerful weapons but are not thought of as a large or powerful country is quite intriguing to me. Makes me wonder more about what they get their funding from and how they can afford to have military technology up there with the front runners.

I thought your choice of the Netherlands as a country was unique, be it random or otherwise. I was not aware of any of the facts contained in the article regarding the Netherlands tools of defense and it was appealing to me as my family has a military background. There were several things I felt that you could have elaborated on such as the types of imports, as well as, a brief description and/or definition of the missiles and what allowed them to be available to such a limited number of countries. There was also one sentence that I had a problem following. This was "This purchase marks for the continuation of the forefront air defense."

Your choice of article was very interesting and you did a terrific job summarizing it and giving detailed information about the Netherlands. However, for future reference, I would try following the assigned topic a little closely. I would have liked to learn more about exactly how you accessed LexisNexis. Many readers are new to these online databases and might want to attempt using one for themselves. How did you find LexisNexis and how did you complete your search? What do they offer and are there a variety of publications? Would you recommend another archive for articles that are more substantial?

Hi again. After reading through several more posts, I realized that there must be another LexisNexis assignment that I missed and came across the "Choose a Country" post. Anyway, you followed the assignment perfectly. Sorry for the embarrassing mispost! :)

The Netherlands was a good country to choose. I often think of the nation as carefree and peaceful, as if they have no major worries in life. But it interesting to see that they are active in the international field, just as the United States or any other country. I liked how you actually got an article about a recent affair involving the country, rather than simply stating facts. The article gave a more relatable and realistic perception of the Netherlands. Its so neat to see how people have been picking not so typical countries. They are not choosing the popular countries, but rather ones that sit in the back of our minds.

Wow I think for a random choice, the Netherlands was a very good choice! I actually traveled to the Netherlands for my recent birthday, which was in October of 2007! That's crazy! It was nothing short of amazing. I was a bit skeptical about traveling to a new country and wondered on the whole 12 hour flight what it would be like. I wondered about the people, the food everything! And it turned out to be such a free spirited country. I would definitely return if given the opportunity. About the article, I am a bit surprised about all these powerful weapons that you researched. IT really does make you wonder how they plan on using all this technology.

I like how a lot of what you did was random. You weren't really looking for something specific and I feel as though thats a good way of starting an article. This is very interesting but what does the missile have to do with the cancer you were writing about. That didn't make a lot of sense. I like the Netherlands, I havent been there but I hear a lot of good things about it. The article looks a little short but it went in depth so I don't think that its that big of a deal. For the most part, well done.

That was a pretty random choice. You did a good job summarizing the article. The information that you provided on the Netherlands was very informative. Sadly I have to say that I knew none of the facts you provided. The only thing I found wrong was that you didn't provide the steps on how you found the article. Though this wasn't what I chose, I believe we were assigned to give a step-by-step on how you came across the article.

My family is actually from the Netherlands region, but I had no idea that the Netherlands dealt with war items like missiles. I suppose in this day and age it is necessary to have weapons in order to always be ready just in case of an attack. I still would never have guessed that the Netherlands would be the first country to receive the new missile internationally. I was also unaware about the Netherlands agricultural business, but judging by its location and its access to water it makes sense to be agriculturally based. Judging by this article, I have a lot to learn about me heritage.
